Blues striker Ben Morris’s season is over after he underwent surgery on an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

The 19-year-old, who returned from a loan spell at Forest Green Rovers last month, suffered the injury in training.

The academy product, who recently signed a new contract which runs to 2021 with the option of a further year, tweeted a photo of himself on crutches following the op.

“The operation went well but we are looking at a recovery period of nine months to a year for Ben,” Town physio Matt Byard told the club site.

Grant Ward suffered a similar injury at QPR on Boxing Day and was also expected to be sidelined for nine months, while Andre Dozzell missed virtually the whole of last season having ruptured his ACL on the opening day of the campaign.

Morris’s only appearance for the Town first team this season came as a sub on the opening day of the campaign, while he made one start and three sub appearance in 2017/18.

Fellow U23s striker Ben Folami has already been ruled out for the season with a torn achilles tendon.

ITFCsince73 added 21:14 - Feb 7 We need to get someone into the club NOW!! to reverse this spell that's been put on us. This just isn't normal. If Dozzell is anything to go by, we won't see Morris in 1st team until we play L2 football. Season 20/21.

herfie added 22:24 - Feb 7 Desperately sad news for the lad. Wish him a full and speedy recovery. We do seem to be cursed with a succession of similar injuries; questions regarding training regimes are inevitable. But, more likely, it's just bad luck; part and parcel of pro football. Having said that, it's interesting that David McGoldrick, a perpetual sick-note whilst here, has badly missed a game at Sheffield United, and appearsto be on tip top form. Strange.

Suffolkboy added 22:52 - Feb 7 Herfie ,I fully support your comments ; but McG seemed often more interested in being home ( with family. ) even when called for International duty .The move nearer home appears to suit him better : & one is tempted to wonder whether his fitness/or not had much to do with ITFC demands ? It is however only too easy to be unaware of the physical challenges of modern professional football ,whuch is more athletic , quicker and results in higher impact injuries ! COYB

rugbytomc added 09:50 - Feb 8 That's a real blow for Morris. He might have got some gametime towards the end of the season once our relegation is confirmed. Hope him and the other injured players have speedy recoveries. As for McGoldrick - McCarthy came out and said afterwards that he refused to move from his Nottingham base. That's about two and a half hours in the car each way every day - not good for someone with hamstring injuries. So it's not surprising he's stayed fit. It's just annoying he couldn't have moved down when he played for us and stayed fitter.

Kikapu added 10:25 - Feb 8 Makes a bit of a mockery of the suggestion that we bung all our youngsters into the first team, eh? These kids are vulnerable to the physical and mental pressure put on them from a very young age and need to be looked after a lot more carefully than they are - by all clubs. They are not greyhounds or horses and, as such, they are not bred for the job so they'll come into academies, up and down the country, with all sorts of unknown strengths and weaknesses. It's a great credit to them that they've got as far as they have. Good luck to them all.

Juggsy added 10:32 - Feb 8 Surely McGoldricks upturn in performance is linked to Sheffield United playing some proper football and playing to his strengths? Under McCarthy all he could expect was a succession of long balls hoofed over the top for him to deal with. No wonder he lost his appetite for it. To be fair, he wouldn't be doing any better in our current system either unless utilised as the no 10 position.

harlingblue added 02:53 - Feb 9 It's such a shame that injuries to some of our most promising younger players have been during training sessions/training games? Morris and Faloami would have both been pushing for at least a place on the 1st team bench, along with Dozzell, now fully fit but with so much body growing/game time to make up. Bishop has been through this, is now looking as if he wants to be part of the game again, whilst McGoldrick, in latter years, Huwes and Adeyemi have just drained the club of money that could have been put to better use.
